The dedicated team at Straw & Pearce can support you by providing advice, letting you know what to expect and helping you to understand your rights in relation to Child Protection Conferences.

A Child Protection Conference is a multi agency meeting organised by Social Services to decide if a child is at risk of significant harm and to decide whether a Child Protection Plan is necessary to ensure the child’s safety.

You, as a parent or carer, will be invited to attend the conference and it is important that you do so. The conference is chaired by a chairperson, who is independent of your child’s social worker and will ensure the meeting is fair and follows the correct process. The meeting will also include other professionals including:

  • Your child’s social worker
  • Teachers, health visitors or doctors
  • Other professionals involved, such as from the police or mental health services

During the conference each of the professionals will share their information and any concerns they have. You will have the opportunity to tell your side of the story and explain your circumstances. Everyone will be asked to score the level of risk and share their views as to whether your child needs a Child Protection Plan. The chair of the conference will make the final decision on whether a Child Protection Plan is necessary.

If a Child Protection Plan is required this will set out what the concerns are, what needs to change, what support will be provided and how the progress will be reviewed.

If a Child Protection Plan is put in place then this will be reviewed in three months and thereafter in six monthly intervals (if necessary).

The Straw & Pearce team can attend this meeting to support you and will provide you with advice before and after the meeting so that you understand what to expect and what your rights are. Legal Aid is available subject to your income and capital.
